Given a set S⊆P(Ω) (where P(Ω) denotes the power set of Ω) there exists[1] a smallest σ-algebra which we denote σ(S) such that:
- S⊆σ(S) where σ(S)=⋂A⊆P(Ω) is a σ-algebra∧S⊆AA
We say:
- σ(S) the σ-algebra generated by S
- S the generator of σ(S)
